Job/Vocation Description
With over 38 years of experience in the woodworking industry, I have become quite comfortable managing the fabrication and installation of Architectural Millwork and Furniture items for large scale interiors projects. These projects include High-End Hospitality projects, including Hotel & Casino Interiors, Restaurants; Bars, Spas, and specialty Suites. I also have extensive experience working on large scale Residences and Executive Offices for Corporate Clients.
I have recently changed my position, working as an active senior project manager for a tier 1 Residential Contractor, managing interior finishes, millwork, and furnishings. This change allows me to utilize my extensive experience, to work with Global Architectural and Interior Design firms, developing design intent into sucessful high-level interiors projects.
Education
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art, with a Major in Design. My main education is the 38 years of experience taking on and completing large scale projects in the manufacture of corporate and residential furniture and Architectural Millwork. Higher education sets you on the path - experience challenges you with real world issues and forces you to find working solutions - there is no greater learning experience.
First Project
I don't remember my first project - I do remember a significant project - an Executive Office in Beverly Hills. We had many challenges and were inspired to use our skills to take the Interior Designer's vision - and create one-of-a-kind furniture items for a very demanding client. We were breaking new ground, with imposing layout; engineering, and manufacturing requirements. The design aesthetic was clear and well thought out - we had worked with this designer for many years and developed a vocabulary - requiring very little effort to take his design concept from paper to reality. The materials were complex choices, focusing on picking the right wood veneer for the right application: a Quartered Ebony and Birdseye Maple geometric puzzle, with dramatic contrasts, comprised of radial and angular forms. I, when we first received the requirements for a full sized layout from our veneer face maker, took it upon myself to get a piece of Birch plywood from the shop - take it home, and over the period of a weekend, laid out - by hand - all of the radial lines; diamonds and triangles; veneer pie segments; and intersections. On hands and knees, I took pencil & straightedge, compass points & arcs, and merged them into a perfect balance of precise geometric art-forms. The rest was up to the face maker and the plywood laminator. We sought out the best technology of the time and found a veneer face maker - who was using a service provider - who had a laser. We had recently heard that lasers had been developed that could precisely cut veneers without burning or discoloring edges. The plywood template was shipped to the Mid-West and left to artisan hands to accomplish. When the loose veneer segments arrived - we inspected the precisely cut parts - with sharp points and crisp, clean, and straight edges. The parts were then shipped to the plywood laminator. Piece by piece the faces were assembled - detail by detail - edge by edge - point by point. When finished, we all marveled at the symmetry, the precision of the fabrication, and the cleverness of the design. The ultimate reward was the satisfaction of a client - as a patron of the arts; of a Designer / Client - who provided the impetus and initial design direction; and from our colleagues who complemented and supported our work. Each day I see images of the finished work, I marvel at how this project matured me - by challenging me to take on difficult tasks - and by giving me the opportunity to manage a complex project, through, from a concept to a beautiful reality. (see example of the finished table - below)
First Mentor
My Father - he inspired me to think and to be prepared with answers. How does one take a design intent and turn it into reality - how does one do so while maintaining design integrity, quality of product, and cost efficiency. It is a fine balancing act. He taught me to challenge myself - to think outside the box, yet be practical - to use my resources - to rely on others - and to use all of my skills and attention to detail towards making quality products.
Favorite Associates
My favorite associates include the outstanding Designers; Architects; Vendor Suppliers; and Shop Guys I've worked with these many years. Working with these professionals has enriched my experience - taught me great lessons - stimulated my curiosity. It has been very gratifying to have worked with so many collaborators on so many successful projects.

Industry Awards

Family
My wife is constantly reminding me how important family is in keeping one's head on straight - why else do we do what we do, spending endless hours - many times stressful - solving problems - chasing answers - putting out fires. We do it, so that at the end of the day, we can come home to reap the benefits of our hard earned efforts and enjoy the time we have with our family. The reward - my Daughter inspires me with her insatiable work ethic and her glorious artistic abilities; my Son inspires me with his eclectic musical talents, his desire to perform for others, and his drive and ambition to succeed; my wonderful Wife inspires me with her love, her dedication to family support and family connections, and her family loyalties; my Mother inspires me with her inner strengths and practical intelligence; and my Father inspires me with his honesty and strength of character. To all of my family - this is why we do what we do, why we work so hard - to make it possible to live long and with a comfortable lifestyle.
Job History
I first worked for my Dad - summers; sweeping floors - sorting nails - and being a nuisance. After University - I graduated to the drafting table (great way to learn the nuts and bolts of the business). Took on new roles and responsibilities for the next 18 years, under the tutelage of my patient - yet demanding, Father; my workhorse, yet very talented Uncle; and all of the many well skilled artisans in the shop. They all taught me to pay attention to the details, learn all you can about materials and finishes, and to be patient, yet deliberate, with the process. I learned about visualization - and about technique - and about people skills - and about the challenges and rewards of running a business. From that time forward, I learned how to apply those skills towards producing successful projects for my employers.
